READER RATING:

The Dust of Men composes what they refer to as "testimony music," and it's exactly what you imagined it would be throughout the entire album experience. Think back to the time of back woods Southern tent revivals, and welcome The Dust of Men, the modern-day version. The spirit in their music is so sincerely passionate it becomes contagious. Their songs seem to inspire a universal union, a sound that allows you to mold it into your own.

What the Morning Shows was recorded out of Justin Vernon's (Bon Iver) Wisconsin-based studio, and The Dust of Men even names Bon Iver as a music influence. From the opening refrain of "Children Come Running" "He knows that you hurt, He knows how you've been burned, you've been grieving the cost of everything you lost" you can instantly relate back to Vernons knack for telling a story with heart wrenching clarity and passion. The albums strength is the lyrical depth,as showcased in stand out tracks "What the Morning Shows" ("Sweet consolation bringing that comfort to my aoul, let this heart be unbroken in ways I've never know oh but now I can know") and "Constant Thread" ("There's a constant thread keeps pulling me along, it's never broken yet, no matter how it stretched"). Even though the musicianship is top notch, perhaps the only fault is that the last half of the album offers very little variation in tempo flowing from the instrumental "I See it All" through the sweeping climax of "What my Heart Beats For."

With the influnces this band has they could very easily be forgotten within the fray of the hipster new age folk scene if it wasn't for the passion and conviction in their message. It is a marked return to the days of dust bowl revivals and tent meetings, and a welcomed one at that.
