The album opens with the latest single, "Who Can Be Against Me," and lead single "New Life." Both songs have a sound that you would expect from a modern worship release inspired by groups like Elevation and Bethel. A country feel seeps into the mix with the midtempo "Count It All Joy," as a steel guitar really stands out throughout. "Communion" is more a fresh song thematically. Musically, it vibes with the Elevation and The Belonging Co. sound, but lyrically it looks at communion and how the sacrifice of Christ affects us -- specifically focusing on the blood and body. While there have been other communion-based songs, it's a slight twist on the messages we've heard in the past. Angela Silva sings, "Oh what an offering; the breaking of Your body. Look at what the blood has done. My debt is paid now, since Your life was poured out. Look at what the blood as done."
"Always" is the first male-led song, and Medi Kay's big and soulful voice really offers up a change of pace. From the slower gospel flavor offered here, the album jumps to a more upbeat pop number in "Worthy (To the One)," led by Joey Silva. The relatively short album (by modern worship standards) comes to a close on a slower worshipful note. With "My Everything," we hear Breanna Anaya for the first time. The lyrics focus on our personal relationship and worship with Jesus. Breanna sings, "Just You and me in the room. Your face is all I'm after. You captured my heart, Lord. You won me forever."
Songs From the Valley is a good look at the talent and heart of Valley One Worship. I appreciate the variety of musical sounds and the conciseness of the album itself. The focus is the worship and not trying to force a moment by repeating a bridge for the 15th time. "My Everything" does feature a longer vamping/instrumental section, but they manage to keep things in check. The music itself sounds wonderful and it's mostly right in line with what volunteer musicians in churches around the US can easily pull off. All in all, Valley One Worship has put together a nice album. It holds within the standard of what you'd expect but still offers a little variety. "Communion" is the clear standout here for those interested in a sampling, but those who enjoy listening to modern worship music will likely enjoy the full album.

Medi Kay: We're amazed at how quickly things have unfolded! Although we've only been around for a year, it comes after years of prayer for a creative expression of God's move in the Central Valley. We feel we're carrying the momentum of those prayers. After hearing and witnessing the stories, prayers, and testimonies of the thousands being transformed by Jesus in our region, we were compelled to write songs that showcased that.
Medi: As a collective, we are committed to serving, equipping, and unifying churches in the Central Valley and beyond, echoing the words of Ephesians 4:13: "until we all reach unity." Our mission extends into and beyond our local community, as we aim to usher in God's Kingdom across California and beyond. Through songwriting, worship training, and highlighting the move of God through our music, we hope for the Central Valley to be a hub of spiritual life that impacts the world.
Medi: "Communion" was such a special song to write. I (Medi) wrote it with a friend from Australia, Maxine McGrath. We felt the need for the Church to have more songs that speak about the blood of Jesus. We ended up with this powerful anthem that points to the access we have to the presence of God because of His sacrifice on the Cross. The song honors the act of communion: the body of Jesus broken and His blood poured out so that we could experience Him fully and make Him known.
Medi: At Visalia First, the song "Always" really resonates. It was written during a time where many in our church were dealing with the loss of loved ones, tough medical diagnoses, and the difficulty of transitions. This song reminds us that as things around us change constantly, the promises of Jesus remain constant. Because His love is unwavering, we can worship Him no matter what's going on around us. In every situation, He's still worthy.
Medi: Songwriting is such a special and life-giving time for us. We have a group of writers from churches in the Valley and across California, sharing vision and fellowship before breaking into smaller groups of 3-4 writers. At the end of a weekend of writing, we come together for a large songshare. We sing, cry, laugh, and dance along to these new songs, and we leave with anthems to impact our homes and respective churches. From there, we select songs to be produced and recorded as part of Valley One Worship's collective.
Medi: Our Valley is incredibly diverse, and it's important for us to reflect the community and context we come from. For that reason, our music contains a large span of genre influences: from CCM to gospel, country, alternative, pop, and even R&B. As we release more music, you'll hear a broad range of sounds that all reflect the diverse life we see in the Central Valley.
Medi: While our music is rooted in the move of God in the Central Valley, we believe our message is not limited to this region. Our songs have impacted listeners from all across the world: from churches in the Philippines singing our songs to families in Brazil, South Africa, Germany finding encouragement in our music. We hope to take this message across California and beyond, contending for transformation nationwide, just as we are experiencing here in the Valley.
