Three years after their debut self-titled album, Florida's own
CALLED is back with an EP called
Ethos. The trio of musicians and singers once again brings its '90s-inspired brand of alternative and pop rock, which seems primed and ready for fans of artists like early Sixpence None The Richer, Caedmon's Call, and Jars of Clay. There's an interesting stylistic dichotomy here, too; other than the closing track "Overcome," all of the songs sung by guitarist Heather Sharp are acoustic-based, while bassist Andre Boucher's vocals always accompany a more energetic, rock-flavored track. This works in the band's favor, as Boucher's vocals aren't particularly strong, but work fairly well in the louder, rockier style. As a ministry-oriented band, CALLED uses their music to worship the Lord and to reach out to the needs of those who may be struggling, which goes hand-in-hand with the many resources found on their website. They also strive to encourage believers and demonstrate what it looks like to walk in faith, as "He Leads Me" says, "
So what if I gained the whole world if it just led me astray / tomorrow is bygones's remedy, taken in today / clean my hands and fill my heart / I'm seeking Your face to do my part / by living as You lead me."
Ethos isn't a perfect EP, but it has some good moments to offer, and it lifts up the name of Jesus.
