02. Bartholomew Higgins

Star-Studded-Super-Step
by Poor Old Lu

If you want to see what I am saying
Focus then, on our decisions
Blindness, greed, and empty feelings
They're all ours and where are we now

If you wanna see just listen
To the light I can see glistening

Again and again to war for our freedom
I haven't got my peace of mind
I tell you this and you tell me
To come inside it's warm and nice

Behind the Song:
'A strange song with an equally strange background. 'Bartholomew Higgins' must've been written in late '91 or early '92 - not long before 'Star-Studded-Super-Step' was recorded. A bit grungy. Slightly moody. Mostly serious. The song title actually came from Aaron & Jesse's dad, Dave, who just happened to say that name as we were trying to decide on a song title. No other reason behind it. During the mix sessions for 'Star-Studded', we realized that one of the alternating vocal tracks had mysteriously disappeared, so we had to re-record it in a pinch. It sounds slightly different from the other. This song is fairly shallow lyrically. Any deep significance would revolve around 'what we choose to focus on' in our lives. If those things be good and right, our lives show that fruit. If they be wrong and selfish, our lives will show that too. The last oddball note about this song is that the first verse can be sung to Nirvana's song 'Mr. Moustache', from the album 'Bleach'. Not sure why that all came to be, but I was actually singing the melody for that song as I wrote the first verse. In fact, both songs have the word 'decision' at the end of the second line. Weird.' - Poor Old Lu
