06. Who You’ve Always Been

Peace Be Still
by Hope Darst

First time I found You on my knees
It was simple, it was free
I knew Your love was I all needed
It mattered more than anything

Here I remember who You’ve always been
Here I remember the moment that we met
Every time I surrender
It all comes back again
And You’re who You’ve always been
Who You’ve always been

And after all this time I find
Nothing’s changed, You satisfy
So I lay everything aside
Just to meet You one more time (Oh God)
Just to meet You one more time

Here I remember who You’ve always been
Here I remember the moment that we met
Every time I surrender
It all comes back again
And You’re who You’ve always been
Who You’ve always been
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, Oh, ooh, yeah

Oh my anchor, my savior You stay the same
My defender, heart-mender You never change
Oh, my anchor, my savior You stay the same
My defender, heart-mender You never change
Oh, my anchor, my savior You stay the same
My defender, heart-mender You never change

You never change
You never change (I know)
You never change (Oh)
You never change

Here I remember who You’ve always been
Here I remember the moment that we met
Every time I surrender
It all comes back again
And You’re who You’ve always been
Who You’ve always been
You’re who You’ve always been
Who You’ve always been

Behind the Song:
"In the spring of 2018, I had gone away with my church's worship team to pray, worship, write, and encounter God. Our pastors, Henry and Alex Seeley, always start these weekends with worship and the word. Alex began to share with us a scripture from Revelation 2:4-6, that talks to believers about losing our first love, forgetting how we loved God when we first met Him. The presence of God was so thick in the room that day and for the next couple of hours we each shared the moment we first met Jesus, the moment we really feel in love with Him. I can say it was one of the most powerful moments of my life. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room, and as we shared, you could feel God flooding our hearts with a tender repentance and remembrance of our love for Him. When we broke later to go write, I couldn’t shake what happened to us. So right then, not even an hour later, Ben Cantelon, Lauren Strahm, and I huddled up in a room and began to write exactly what we did that day, remember. It’s why the first line of the song says, “First time I found you on my knees / It was simple / It was free”. My prayer is that what happened to us that day, remembering how we first fell in love with Jesus is tangible when people listen and that it leads every listener to also remember when they fell in love with Him too. I‘ve been leading this song live for a few years and it was really important to me that we tried to find a way to make it hint at feeling “live” on the album even though it’s a studio version. I really love how it turned out and I can’t wait to take this new version out on the road." - Hope Darst

Psalm 103:1-2 A Psalm of David. Bless the Lord, O my soul, And all that is within me, bless His holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget none of His benefits
