This may appear to be the second EP from The Rocket Summer but it is, in fact, the same as The Rocket Summer EP with one additional track, "She's A Seven." Although The Rocket Summer EP came out when Avary was only 16 and was independently recorded and sold, the sound is still the same 6 years later in The Early Years EP.
On this release, some of the tracks start off with the same guitar/drum introduction with the exception of "So Far Away" and "My Typical Angel," the two "mellow" tracks on the EP. In the track "So Far Away," Avary talks about who he is as a person without his friend there to influence his behavior. Both "So Far Away" and "My Typical Angel" have the "love song/heartache" feel to them. Some of the lyrics are hard to understand unless you have them right in front of you. When I choose to listen to a something, I base most of my decision on what the artist is saying in each track; in this album the words are hard to distinguish.
I enjoyed listening to The Early Years EP overall, although having the lyrics in front of me definitely helped me understand what each song was about. If you enjoyed any of The Rocket Summer's previous albums, then you'll absolutely want to give The Early Years EP a listen!
