I was born in Texas, but moved to Illinois when I was really young. We would visit family every year in the Lone Star State and I'd notice that there would be a change in the air as soon as you cross that state line. It was a change of attitude or confidence in the people; maybe it’s the BBQ or that they knew they were Texans. When Ravenhill would come to play with bands in Deep Ellum in Dallas, TX, we could tell that Texas bands just brought it in a different way. The first show I went to when I moved back to Texas was to see friends (and Dallas natives) Memphis May Fire rock The Door for a hometown show. I watched those boys tear it up, leaving everything on that stage with every bit of raw, Texas emotion and grit as any band has ever had. I knew that I should reach out to MMF guitarist Kellen McGregor for a few words about Oh, Sleeper and their record, Children of Fire.
Kellen: The rad thing about Oh, Sleeper is that each record of theirs has a unique, distinct tone and attitude to it. When I heard Children of Fire, I was like, "Whoa! This record slams!" It's got their distinct sound, but with a raw edge and aggression to it that leaps out from the speakers. I would jam it when we were out on the road and it was my turn to drive late at night. I specifically remember that because I was still rocking the OG big brick iPod. Oh, Sleeper are some great dudes that have always written amazing music and inspired a lot of people out there.
This was the first record I listened to by Oh, Sleeper, and I don’t have any of the history Kellen has with this band, but this band is intriguing in its subject matter. They have a specific voice and viewpoint that I believe is important to explore. Oh, Sleeper brings brutal honesty with raw passion and emotion in this record. From start to finish, this record delivers. Legends like Oh, Sleeper and Memphis May Fire make us proud to be back in Texas.
