For our 7th annual Highlighting feature, we split the year into TWO pieces -- January to June and July to December. Normally, we select our top 25 most anticipated releases for the whole year, but we realize that it's tough to really gauge EVERYTHING that may release throughout a given year when we're making the list in January. So, for 2012, we split the year into TWO pieces -- January to June and July to December, and we're using this format again for 2013. Also, each list contains 15 artists/releases for a total of 30 in total for 2013. So, without further ado, we give you Highlighting First-Half 2013!

#4. Fiction Family
Fiction Family Reunion
Release Date: January 29, 2013
 |
Though having not been too familiar with Nickel Creek (and that hasn't really changed), I was impressed with Fiction Family's debut album four years ago. Their Reunion is promising to be one of the best acoustic/folk albums of 2013.

I've had quite a few listens of Fiction Family Reunion under my belt since late 2012, and yeah, this is good stuff. Though the family's grown beyond just Jon Foreman and Sean Watkins, so have the dynamics, so be advised that there are many surprises in store. Kicking off the year with a bang, it'll be one January release you don't want to pass up.

How does Jon Foreman find the time to write all the songs he does? Between his great solo albums of a few years ago, Switchfoot's releases and his partnership with the late, great Nickel Creek's Sean Watkins, you have to wonder when the man sleeps. But the material has always been strong and Foreman is among Christian Music's deepest thinkers and songwriters. Someone hand this man an energy drink.

I'll be honest... I still am not a fan of Sean Watkins vocals--especially when coupled with the more distinct styling of Jon Foreman's--but as a fan of Switchfoot since they began, I tend to gravitate to almost anything Foreman puts his fingers on. Fiction Family Reunion is shaping up to be a project that tops its predecessor as well.
- John DiBiase
