In 2017, vocalist
Tara Hawley released her debut album,
Stay Awhile, combining elements of easy listening, blues rock, jazz, and contemporary into a diverse package. A few years later, Hawley teamed up with songwriter and musician Allan Licht to begin writing and recording music together. This collaboration has resulted in a number of singles, including 2024’s “Glory to the King.” The song is a corporate worship anthem meant to praise God for His goodness and love for His people. The overall sound of the song is reminiscent of the big worship choruses of late ‘90s and early ‘00s Hillsong and Vineyard, which honestly makes me feel a little nostalgic. The lyrics are far from groundbreaking (“
I surrender my heart here before You / I lay down all my sins at Your feet / give You all of my trials and burdens / Your grace Lord is all that I need … Lamb of God, let us praise Him / Emmanuel, let us praise Him / Lamb of God, let us praise Him / our Redeemer, El Shaddai, oh Holy One”), but the focus is completely on lifting up the name of the Lord, making it perfect for congregational worship. If you prefer music with stronger artistic merit or more challenging songwriting, “Glory to the King” probably isn’t for you. But if you’re looking for more worship music for a playlist or to sing at church, you may want to give this one a shot.
