03. The Heart of a Graveyard

Songs of Death and Resurrection
by Demon Hunter

Everything in time
Set your eyes upon the shallow surface
Hollow out your mind
How divine, you disengage your self

Tell me
Tell me of your consolation
Tell me
I am lost in the gray
Tell me that your final home is not a…
A shot in the dark
Tell me that your hopes and dreams don’t end in the heart

Of a graveyard

Set aside your soul
Let tomorrow realize itself

(Pre-chorus)

(Chorus)

Brace for the ending
You may not see
Will you stop descending
Six shallow feet

(Pre-chorus)

(Chorus)

Behind the Song:
I remember the first time producer Aaron Sprinkle sent me a version of “The Heart of a Graveyard” with the synth lead added to the intro and choruses. At first I didn’t know what to think, but my intuition usually told me to trust Aaron’s instincts. Listening to it now—especially this acoustic version—it’s tough to imagine the song without it. Hearing it this new way makes that detail seem all the more necessary. When we recorded this collection of songs, we did so live in the studio. This was not only the first time we’d ever played this song together as a band, but it was the first time we’d recorded this way, period. Ordinarily, we piece things together. We start with a “scratch” guitar to a click, and then we track drums, final guitars, etc. This time, we were determined to capture the vibe of playing them as a unit. To me, this song provides something very crucial within this collection: variation. Just as the ballads themselves provide moments of calm introspection on a standard DH release, an upbeat song like this gives necessary range to a collection of mostly slow numbers. No matter the record, peaks and valleys are imperative. —Ryan Clark
