12. Start Somewhere

Tonight
by TobyMac

Last night, everything was moviní so fast
I could barely keep track
Of my offenses or your defenses
In hindsight, I woulda, coulda, shoulda not gone there
But left without a word to spare
Was it your offenses or my defensiveness?

Thatís got me thinkiní that weíre never gonna get it right
I wanna straighten this before the sun goes down tonight
If I could only fight the bitterness I feel inside
This thing is eatiní me alive

Well Iím right here
And youíre right there
And God knows weíve got to start somewhere
ĎCause Iím messed up
And youíre broken
And those shots we fired are still smokiní

Iím tossiní and turniní on the things Iíd undo
As I wrestle with the painful truth
My sleep escapes me as guilt berates me
Exhausted, the memories are drawing so near
I can see it like a world premiere
When did my objective lose all objectiveness?

If I need you, and you need me
How can you turn your back and just leave me?
When Iím right here, and youíre right there
And God knows weíve got to start somewhere

I said some things that I regret
And if I could, Iíd take Ďem back
If I could turn my words around
You wouldnít hear a sound

But here I am, and there you are
The space between us is not so far
Iím reaching out my hand in love
Before the fading sun, forgive me for what Iíve done

Behind the Song:
ďItís about spousal struggle. Any time youíre in love with somebody youíre going to bang heads from time to time; youíre going to have your points of struggle. I donít know how many times Iíve been lying in bed, eyes wide open, sweating it out and thinking, How am I going to make this right? Just regretting things Iíve said, the words I chose, and thinking about how to approach making that right. Then comes the resolve, the apology, and forgiveness. The song is all about that moment where youíre not quite there yet, and youíre sweating getting there. I love that song; itís one of my favorite songs on the record. Itís a cool perspective on confrontation and reconciliation.

ďMusically, the song has a Latin flavor, so weíve got live horns on that. My favorite day recording of the whole record was the horn day. I love horns, because theyíre so full of flavor. And when it comes to Latin music, horns are always prevalent. We used some of the guys from Salvador and some of the guys from Denver and the Mile High Orchestra. We had a good time.Ē - tobyMac
