Plead the Widow's Cause hopefully is familiar to most of our readers, but if not, allow me to introduce you to this larger-than-life post-hardcore band from the South Jersey area that should be on everyone's radar. Having just dropped their sophomore effort, Silver Glass Stare, we see a testament to the band's growth since their debut, Pain Split, which already set a high bar in the post-hardcore scene (as well as placing second in our year-end overall picks for 2022). With this new release, the band has met and exceeded expectations, delivering what will likely be an Album-of-the-Year contender for many.

From the opening track, "Marah," to the closing seconds of "Spitting Venom," Silver Glass Stare is a full-on journey through raw emotion infused with intricate musicianship. The band's lineup, featuring Ian Kelly on vocals, Matt Cummings and Brett Wanamaker on guitar, Bill Finocchiaro on drums, and Mitchell Layton on bass, showcases a strong, cohesive unit that has honed their craft to perfection. Each member brings their own unique influences and strengths to the proceedings that help develop a sound that is both powerful and nuanced in its approach.

One of the standout aspects of this album is the incredible musicianship. The low-end bass lines provided by Mitchell Layton add depth and heaviness that perfectly complements the aggressive guitar riffs and thunderous drumming. The breakdowns are spectacular, providing those cathartic moments that hardcore fans live for. Tracks like "Jet Black Heart" and "Burn Bright, Burn Out" are prime examples of the band's ability to blend melody with sheer intensity.

Theologically, Plead the Widow's Cause continues to impress. Often delving into profound and dark subjects, their lyrics are deeply rooted in their faith. They are unafraid to proclaim their beliefs, joining an ever-growing niche in a genre that often shies away from such bold statements. The album's narrative weaves a story of personal and societal struggles, offering a raw and unapologetic commentary on the human condition. Songs like "Clip the Wings" and "Life Moves in a Circle" reflect their commitment to justice, compassion, and faith, drawing inspiration from the Biblical teachings of Jesus. It's been encouraging to watch talented bands like Plead the Widow's Cause that are skilled in their craft and dedicated to a higher purpose. Plead the Widow's Cause proves that the intersection of faith and fear can produce honest and intense music. Their willingness to stand firm in their beliefs while delivering top-notch hardcore music is commendable and inspiring.

Silver Glass Stare is a masterful album that solidifies Plead the Widow's Cause as a force to be reckoned with in the post-hardcore scene. With its exceptional musicianship, profound lyrics, and unwavering faith, this album is a must-listen for any hardcore fan. Silver Glass Stare has something for everyone, whether you're drawn to the crushing breakdowns, the melodic interludes, or the thought-provoking lyrics. Don't be surprised if this album ends up on many (including JFH's) "Album of the Year" lists -- it's that good.
